Minute With Mallon! Be a 4.0 Kind of Person!

Welcome to Minute with Mallon!

Something I Taught:

Along with business/career goals, I'm always helping my clients to gain more control in their personal lives too.

I was working with a client today who had set a goal two months ago to walk at least four miles every week for the entire quarter. When I asked how it was going, he said he’d done a pretty good job — but admitted he hadn’t hit it every single week. I could see the disappointment on his face — not just in telling me, but in himself.

Before we wrapped up the call, I asked him to do me a favor: “For the next month, I want you to hit at least four miles every single week. If you want to do more, great — but I don’t want to see 3.9 or less on any of those weeks.”

Then I told him the reason I was asking him to do that was that he needed to convince himself that he does what he says he's going to do. That will carry over into all areas of his life, not just physical fitness.

"Be a 4.0 kind of person, Steve!"

He’s also the father of four boys — two still in diapers (so they don’t count yet!), and two already in school. I asked him to explain this concept to his older sons and help them set their own goals for school, sports, and other activities. Then, when they set those goals, they’d follow through — doing exactly what they said they would. There’s nothing more important than becoming the kind of person who keeps promises to themselves.

Call to Action:

So this week, pick one area of your life — work, health, family, or faith — and make a small promise to yourself.

Write it down!  And put it where you'll see it multiple times a day!!

Then make a decision to keep that promise.

You’ll be practicing the art of living a disciplined life.

“Discipline is doing the thing you said you were going to do long after the emotion you said it with has gone.”

You’ll be amazed at how your confidence and self-discipline grow every time you follow through.

Be a 4.0 kind of person‼️

Something to Ponder:

How you do anything is how you do everything.

Something I Learned:

I'm reading a really good book that was recommended to me by a friend called The Nature Fix by Florence Williams. She talks about why nature makes us happier, healthier, and more creative.  Excellent read!

I'm in chapter 11 right now.  It talks about how to deal with ADD and ADHD.

There was no such thing as ADD and ADHD until a little over 130 years ago when people started putting children in classrooms. Up to that time, children mostly learned with their parents.  A lot of it was outdoors and they got lots of physical activity.

It made me remember that in my elementary school, every single classroom had a large wall of windows. Probably 30-40 feet long, and we were looking out at trees and plants all day long.  There was tons of sunshine coming into each classroom.  It was absolutely Awesome!!!

Then in 7th grade, my friends and I were moved to a brand new junior high school. Each classroom had a six inch wide by approximately 3 foot tall window on one end of the classroom and another on the other end. They were up about 2 feet from the ceiling so you couldn't see anything.

That move coincided with the fact that my grades started dropping, there was a ton of fighting and behavior problems in that school, and there were times when my friends and I felt like we was going crazy being stuck in those rooms seven hours a day.  I didn't put this together until reading this book!

In the chapter Florence said this:

You can't bounce off the walls if you take the walls down!

Great point!

So how does that apply to you?

Two things majorly help people suffering from these neurodevelopmental conditions:

  • Exercise - especially in the morning.

  • Nature - getting as much as possible.

So how does this apply to you?
