Minute With Mallon: Most People Would’ve Kept Going!

Welcome to Minute with Mallon!

I’m on vacation this week, and this story from  a few years ago came back to mind—it’s one I’ve never forgotten, and it still challenges me today.  Enjoy!

Something I Continue to Learn

On April 26, 2005, I was driving home from a business trip, heading up a stretch of road I’ve always enjoyed. It was that time of day when the sun is low, everything feels calm, and you’re just ready to get home.

A few minutes into the drive, the car in front of me suddenly veered off the road. I took my foot off the gas and watched it try to correct… but it overcompensated and started sliding sideways. Then it began to roll. Over and over.

It finally went off the road, down an embankment, and hit a tree.

I stopped my car and ran down to it. There were two young people inside—a brother and sister. The roof was crushed in. They were trapped and panicking. I was able to rip part of the roof away and pull them out, one at a time, and get them up the hill.

The girl was terrified. Shaking. Eyes locked on the car. I knelt down in front of her and said, “You’re going to be okay. The car doesn’t matter. You do. God just took care of you.”

A few minutes later, the ambulances came and took them away.

Not long after that, their parents arrived. The father walked up to me, shook my hand, and said something I’ve never forgotten:

“Thank you for stopping and taking care of my kids. Most people would have just kept going.”

That stopped me.

Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?

A couple days later, it hit me.

We go through life at 65 miles an hour. Busy. Focused. Moving from one thing to the next. And all around us… there are people who are hurting. Struggling. Crashing.

But we don’t see them.

Or worse… we see them, but we keep going. And yes, I do it too… 😔

I believe God is calling us to slow down enough to see what’s really happening around us. To live with a different perspective. To notice people. To step in.

Because one day, we’ll stand before Him.

And I can’t help but think… what if He said:

“Thank you for stopping and taking care of my kids.”

So here’s something to think about this week: where in your life are you moving too fast to see what’s right in front of you? Slow down, pay attention, and when you see someone who needs help—stop.

Something to Ponder:

"There are divine appointments on ordinary roads. Stay awake enough to recognize them."
