Minute With Mallon:  Ready. FIRE! Aim.

Welcome to Minute with Mallon!

Something I Taught:

I was on a board meeting call this week with a company in the medical field.

The two owners were discussing a decision involving a Memorandum of Understanding they were preparing with another company.

One partner wanted to slow down, dig into the details, have an attorney review everything, and make sure every T was crossed and every I was dotted before sending it over.

The other partner wanted to move.

His thinking was simple: Let’s get it to them so we can get started.

We spent four or five minutes talking it through with the board.

In this particular situation, we determined that slowing down and getting the details right was in the best interest of the company.

Once the partner who wanted to move quickly understood why, he didn’t resist it. He simply adjusted.

And that got me thinking.

In business and in life, there are different seasons.

Sometimes the right approach is:

Ready. FIRE! Aim.

Quit overthinking it. Make the decision. Take action. Learn as you go.

But there are other times when the tendency becomes:

Ready. Aim. Aim. Aim. Aim…

We keep studying, discussing, analyzing, and preparing, but never actually pull the trigger.

And sometimes, like in our board meeting, slowing down really is the wise thing to do.

The challenge is knowing which situation you’re in.

So let's talk about you:

Before an important decision, ask yourself two questions:

“What is the greater risk right now: moving too quickly or waiting too long?”

Then ask:

“What would wisdom require of me?”

Sometimes wisdom says, Move.

Sometimes wisdom says, Slow down.

The goal isn’t to always move fast or always be cautious.

The goal is to know which season you’re in.

Something to Ponder:

If you want to fly with the Eagles in the morning, you can’t go out and hoot with the owls all night long.

Something I Learned:

Don't tell me you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

My five-year-old grandson, Baker, won the Kindness Award for all the kindergarten classes in his school this week!

Every morning when his mom drops him off, he walks into school hugging every teacher he passes and telling them he loves them.

Then, when he walks into his classroom, he cheerfully and enthusiastically says,

"Good morning, everyone!"

He puts a smile on people’s faces simply by being who he is and bringing joy to everyone around him.

I think we can all learn a lot from Baker.

Maybe the question for the rest of us is:

What do people feel when we walk into the room? ❤️
