Minute With Mallon: What Would Best Friend Say?
Welcome to Minute with Mallon!
Something I Taught:
One of my long-standing clients spent the past six months pursuing a goal that would have changed his life. Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, it isn't going to happen. He poured everything he had into achieving that goal, working long hours every day with a level of intensity I've rarely seen.
It was totally inspiring walking through this with him.
Needless to say, he was very discouraged and disappointed when we met for our session.
Such is life.
Since he didn't get what he wanted, I asked him this question:
Since you didn't win it, what story are you tempted to tell yourself now?
His answers:
“Did God actually call me to this? I don’t have what it takes. What did I do wrong?”
Then I asked him this:
What would you tell a friend who had just gone through what you've gone through?
His answer:
"You are courageous. You're a Warrior. You don't back down, and people will look up to you because they know you're not afraid. You're not afraid, and you'll take on whatever the Lord leads you to."
Isn't it amazing how if we change perspective and begin to treat ourselves as if we were actually our own best friends, everything changes?
The stories we tell ourselves after disappointment often shape our future more than the disappointment itself.
This week, listen carefully to the story you're telling yourself. If it's not the story you'd tell someone you love, rewrite it. Because the story you believe today will influence the decisions you make tomorrow.
Something to Ponder:
"Hurry and love are incompatible. All my worst moments as a father, a husband, and a pastor, even as a human being, are when I’m in a hurry."
John Mark Comer
Something I Learned:
Want to get in great shape?
My son Joe sent me a YouTube video a while back calledWhat Happens to Belly Fat When You Walk on an Empty Stomach.
It does a really good job explaining a simple approach to losing belly fat. I was tempted to explain it myself, but the video says it better than I could. When you have a little time, give it a watch. It's a little too much to try to put in here.
I'm trying it myself and already seeing some great results!
Sometimes the biggest changes come from the simplest habits. Maybe this will be one that makes a difference for you too.
